Linguistic Proficiency
SPAN3020
While studying abroad in Spain, I took SPAN3020, which included an advanced review of Spanish grammar, verbs, colloquial idiomatic expressions, and vocabulary, focusing on syntax and stylistics. Through frequent writing assignments, projects, and peer collaboration, this course strengthened controlled and free composition skills. Furthermore, this class offered immersive opportunities to apply classroom learning in real-world settings, reinforcing fluency, cultural nuance, and stylistic versatility in Spanish communication.
SPAN3050
This course focused on improving my spoken Spanish through practice in vocabulary, pronunciation, and intonation. I worked on listening comprehension through a combination of in-class conversation, written reinforcement, and language laboratory activities. These experiences helped me gain confidence in my ability to communicate effectively in Spanish, while also refining my accuracy and fluency in real-time conversations.
SPAN3150
In this course, I learned essential medical concepts and terminology in Spanish, focusing on communication in health care and public health settings. Through role-plays, dialogues, and case-based practice, I strengthened my ability to explain medical conditions, symptoms, and treatments in Spanish. I also gained a deeper understanding of cultural considerations that affect patient care in Spanish-speaking communities. This was one of my favorite Spanish classes because it combined language learning with my passion for medicine, giving me practical skills that I will carry into my future career as a physician to provide more empathetic and equitable care to Spanish-speaking patients.
SPAN4090
In this course, I refined my Spanish writing skills through focused study of grammar, syntax, and stylistics. I practiced writing across multiple genres, including analytical paragraphs, short compositions, and creative works in both fiction and non-fiction. The emphasis on style helped me expand my ability to adapt my writing for different audiences and purposes while maintaining grammatical precision. Taking this course in Santiago de Compostela allowed me to draw inspiration from Galicia’s literary and cultural environment, incorporating local perspectives and experiences into my writing. This immersion not only improved my technical skills but also encouraged me to develop a more authentic and expressive voice in Spanish.
SPAN4180
In this course, I strengthened my ability to communicate about health and medicine in Spanish through technical and professional writing. I studied the managerial and business aspects of international health systems while practicing presenting health information clearly to different audiences. One of my favorite parts of the class was writing a research paper on Puerto Rico’s health system, which helped me understand both the challenges and resilience of its medical infrastructure. I also learned about health systems in other countries, gaining a broader global perspective on public health. This class was especially meaningful because it connected language learning with my passion for medicine and prepared me to engage in health communication across cultural and international contexts.
SPAN4190
In this course, I studied cultural perspectives on health, illness, and health services in Hispanic populations. Through readings, discussions, and case studies—all conducted in Spanish—I explored how cultural values, traditions, and beliefs influence health practices and patient-provider interactions. I also examined access, equity, and representation issues within health care systems that serve Hispanic communities. This course deepened my cultural humility and strengthened my ability to approach health care with empathy, awareness, and respect for diverse patient experiences. It reinforced my commitment to using my Spanish proficiency as a communication tool and as a bridge to provide more equitable and compassionate care in my future career as a physician.
